Assistant Controller

Lewis James Professional is a woman-owned staff augmentation, project consulting and direct hire search and placement firm. We are currently seeking an Assistant Controller for a direct hire opportunity with a financial services client.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee monthly and annual financial close activities, including the creation of journal entries in accordance with GAAP, account reconciliations, general ledger analysis, variance explanations, and the compilation of financial statements.
  • Track and manage daily cash positions to ensure sufficient liquidity.
  • Support electronic funds transfers such as ACH and wire payments when necessary.
  • Compute monthly commission payouts and generate supporting commission statements.
  • Supervise the billing cycle and ensure timely and accurate invoicing each month.
  • Prepare financial summaries and insights for executive leadership and investor reporting.
  • Take primary responsibility for all corporate tax obligations, including payroll, sales, property, and income taxes.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable municipal, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Administer the fixed asset tracking system and reconcile with the general ledger records.
  • Support the budgeting process and contribute to forecasting activities.
  • Collaborate on the external audit process by organizing documentation and addressing auditor inquiries.
  • Provide assistance with payroll administration and maintain records for the company’s 401(k) plan.
  • Help develop and implement internal control procedures and policy guidelines aligned with industry standards.
  • Serve as a backup resource for team members during absences or peak workloads.
  • Handle ad hoc assignments and special initiatives as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP principles and financial statement preparation
  • Familiarity with tax laws and compliance standards across local, state, and federal jurisdictions
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities
  • Strong critical thinking and financial analysis skills, with the capacity to work with complex datasets
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, including advanced functions and formatting
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a commitment to producing accurate work
  • Proven leadership qualities and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams
  • Well-developed organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Highly motivated and adaptable, with a dedication to meeting evolving business demands
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online is a plus
  • Background in mergers and acquisitions or investor communications is highly desirable
